Every cup of specialty coffee has a story behind it. The producer looks after the cherry, and processes it, the roaster brings out its flavor and right at the end, one person decides how all of that work tastes in your hands.
That person is the barista.
And one barista has a chance to be seen by the whole industry. HOST Milano is sending one barista from the GCC and the Levant to Milan, with flights and hotel paid for. Nominations close on 30th of November 2026, so if you are a barista, keep reading. If you know one, send them this.

The barista is the last link in the chain
Coffee has its own value chain. It starts with a producer and ends with a barista. Roasters, importers and traders deal with the buzz and run the business behind it. The two ends usually get the least.
A farmer can spend a whole year growing a beautiful coffee, and it can be wasted in thirty seconds at the bar if it is not brewed correctly. A barista can do everything right and still depend on what the farmer sent. They need each other, and the whole industry needs both.
This article is not about the producer but the barista and here is what makes them special. The customer will rarely meet the farmer, but they interact with baristas. The barista represents the farmer by explaining about the coffee, its origin, and decides whether someone walks out as a regular or never comes back. In a way, the barista speaks for everyone who touched that coffee before.
And still, many baristas are asked for a lot and given little back. High skill is expected paired with low pay and little room to grow. When I talk to baristas around the UAE, I keep hearing the same thing: people leave, not because they stopped loving coffee, but because they can't see where the road goes next.
Why baristas should care about HOST Milano
This is why the HOST Milano Barista Experience caught my attention. It won't fix pay or career paths, and one winner can't change things for every barista. It puts a barista in front of the industry and says, you matter.
HOST Milano presents itself as the world's leading exhibition for hospitality, foodservice, coffee and tea. Its Coffee Pavilion brings together international equipment makers, new technology and coffee professionals, with live demonstrations and competitions. A barista who goes doesn't only see machines. They meet people. In this industry, the people you know often shape what comes next for you, and most baristas never get to stand in a room like that.
What the winner gets
The winner gets a sponsored trip to HOST Milano 2027, with return flights, accommodation and access to the exhibition. Over five days at Fieramilano in Rho, you would see:
Coffee innovation: new ways of roasting, extracting and serving
Equipment and tech: the machines and tools shaping the café of tomorrow
Café concepts: design, retail and service ideas from around the world
Global connections: baristas, producers, operators and manufacturers in one place
How to apply
Check that you qualify. You must currently work as a barista in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Lebanon or Jordan.
Prepare your nomination pack. It has three parts: your professional profile, a recent photo and a short statement. Each one is explained in the next section.
Let me help you frame it. If you need help with your draft, Message me on Instagram or email me here and I'll help you put it in the right order so it shows you as the professional you are.
Send your nomination. Email your profile, photo and statement here. The official page has all the details or refer below.
Do it before 30 November 2026. Nominations close on that date.
Your nomination pack
The organizers ask for three things. Get all three ready before you write your email.
Professional profile. Your current role, experience and coffee journey. Say where you work, how long you have been there, and any training or competitions you have done.
Recent photograph. A clear, professional image of yourself. Good light, your face visible, taken recently. Skip the heavy filters.
Short statement. Why you should represent the country where you work at HOST Milano 2027. This is the one that needs the most care, so it gets its own section below.
How to write your statement
The statement is the part most people will get stuck on, so don't aim for perfect. Aim for true. Four questions to get you started:
What do you do today? Where you work, what do you exactly do and what a normal day looks like.
What made you take this job seriously? A cup, a customer, or someone who taught you something that stayed with you.
What would you bring back? If you went to Milan, what would you share with your team and your city's coffee scene?
Why your country? What is happening in coffee where you work that people outside it should know about?
Keep it short and write the way you talk. A real story beats a fancy sentence. Someone who has never met you should be able to picture you after reading it.
A simple way to structure it
Three short paragraphs are enough:
Who you are. Your role, where you work and how long you have been doing this.
What shaped you. One real moment, not your whole life story.
What you would bring back. What you would learn in Milan and who you would share it with.
An example
This one is made up, so please don't copy it. Use your own details.
I'm Layla, a barista at a specialty café in Dubai. I've been behind the bar for four years, making espresso and pour over coffee for around 150 customers a day.
I started because I needed a job. Around 3 years ago, a regular asked why my coffee tasted different from the week before, and I couldn't answer. I spent the next month learning, perfecting my craft, and I haven't stopped asking questions since.
I'd like to represent the UAE because our coffee scene is growing fast, and the people behind the bar rarely get seen. If I go to Milan, I want to bring back what I learn and share it with my team and guests who visit the coffee shop. I want to come back with more than photos and business cards.
Stuck on yours? Send me what you have and I'll help you shape it. Message me on Instagram or email me here.
What happens after you apply
Once nominations close on 30 November 2026, hospitality professionals across the Middle East will be invited to vote for their favorite barista. The winner will be announced on 30 June 2027.
The voting details haven't been published yet. I'll update this page as soon as they are.
Know a barista who should apply?
Send them this. Most baristas won't see a call for nominations unless someone they trust puts it in front of them. If that's you, you could be the reason someone gets to Milan.
Coffee only works when both ends of the chain are looked after. This is a small step for one of them.
Nominations close on 30 November 2026.
