I normally brew two different single origin beans at any given time, but during Ramadan I had to cut down on my coffee intake from three times to once a day. I thought I’ll end up having some kind of caffeine withdrawal during the first few days of fasting, but thank God that wasn’t the case. My preferred choice of brew method during this month was an Aeropress or a V60 post 9pm. Not sure if the caffeine was working because an hour later, I'm in bed fast asleep.

A lot of people end up going completely cold turkey during Ramadan and it kinda makes sense because of lack of sleep during this month. For me, it was more of a wind-down drink after a long day. I don't have a set recipe or technique for any of the beans I use, it'll vary depending on the brew method recommended by the roaster. For this El Salvador, I was aim for a higher ratio 1:17 on the Aeropress and 1:19 on the V60. The grind remains the same on both methods, 12 on the Baratza Encore was the sweet spot. I have experimented with stronger ratios like 1:15, the complexity of this coffee is best experienced in the above mentioned ratios.

For the Aeropress, I have been experimenting with James Hoffman’s much awaited The Ultimate Aeropress Technique. If you are living under a rock and don’t know what I’m talking about, the link to the video is here. For the V60, my target time was 1 minute 30 seconds to 2 minutes and temperature 90-95 degrees C. I have used the same temperature for the Aeropress. The notes were pretty much consistent all the time: subtle honey sweetness and distinct blueberries as it cooled down. The bag lasted around 25 days, which means picking up new beans and exploring a different roaster for Eid. Hope you are enjoying your short break and have a blessed Eid.
